3 YO SWATS THE AIR INSTEAD OF HITTING

Question

My 3.5-year-old son has always been a strong-willed child. About 6 months ago, we started using your discipline methods which have been great. Before that, we relied heavily on spanking but it seemed to just make him more aggressive and nasty back at us. Now, we've implemented strategies like time-outs and removing toys/privileges. It has definitely helped as we see he does not actually hit anymore, just swats the air. Hitting used to be a big problem for us.

While he does show remorse, he continues to swat the air when he is mad and says “No & Get Away!" despite our efforts.

His interactions with new people are also challenging. He often says he doesn’t want to say hi because he is shy and nervous. When people say “hi how are you” he swats at them and says “go away!”.

Do you have any other advice on what we can do to help him?

Thank you for your support.
