Fidgity 8 y/o

Question

My son is 8 years old. Ever since he has been a toddler, he has had a hard time sitting still especially if he gets excited about something. His mind is always racing and he is always trying to figure out how things work. He is very energetic and extremely active. He is also the top in his class in Math and reading. He is always moving and struggles to sit still- dinner, watching tv, school, etc. We have been talking to him about self control and what it means. We have tried a soft cushion at school to give him "wiggle" room and a heavy blanker to see if that settles his sensory a bit. He also has a habit of chewing on his shirt collar and sleeves. He is allowed to have sugarless gum when he feels these urges come on. His teacher has been working with us but we don't seem to be making a lot of progress on the self control side. He is never mean or verbally disrespectful. He just doesn't sit still. He doesn't seem to want to overcome this. When we ask why he doesn't settle down, he says, "I don't know."

Do you have any suggestions for us on how to help him become more aware of his "fidgeting? And to help his self control? Thank you!
