Toddler takes control of bedtime

Question

Hi! I was wondering if you might have any advice for me regarding my almost 2.5 yo son. We are having major issues with sleep!! We have always put him down in his crib awake, and he's done fine for the most part. He used to wake in the night maybe once every three or four days, at which time I would rock and comfort him and put him back in his crib. Everything changed overnight 3.5 weeks ago. One night he slept fine, and the next he didn't...and it's been getting worse ever since. He stopped napping a few days later. Some nights he'll sleep as long as I'm in there with him, but if I try to get up and sneak back into my room, he wakes and starts screaming within a half hour. Some nights he isn't sleeping even when I'm with him (e.g., waking up at 1:50 a.m. and literally not sleeping the rest of the night). He has started getting hysterical about being put in his crib, so he's been sleeping on a sleeping bag on the floor in his room (but he won't stay there unless I'm lying down with him). It has gotten to the point where he screams hysterically if I mention pajamas. All previous nap/bedtime routines now cause extreme distress (reading, singing, praying, etc.). We let him cry sometimes (particularly at naptime), but it's difficult to do at night. We did try it one night when I was just so exhausted I couldn't stay up with him anymore. I put him in his crib at 3:30 am, and he screamed nonstop until 6:30 am when we went in to get him. I am utterly, completely at a loss. Any ideas??
