Is spanking working for us or not?

Question

My husband and I believe in spanking but I don’t like doing it very often. We have a 2 year old girl and a 1 year old boy. If the our son is pulling out books, messes with my glasses, or refuses to come when we call we will give him a smack on his leg. If our daughter disobeys we will give her a spanking. But she is at a stage where she disobeys and throws fits numerous times a day which means lots of spankings. I don’t like giving that many but I’m not sure what else to do. I’ve tried to do time out and taking away privileges but haven’t seen much success. The main issues that we are facing are attitudes and fits. I don’t know whether to spank, ignore and walk away, or do time out. She also will purposely do things she knows are wrong. Is there another way to get correct behavior other than spanking all the time? Every now and then is ok but I don’t want to do it this often. I use Alpha speech and try to always stay calm and strong.
